Unfortunately under our current food system, more and more people eat unhealthy which has a great cost to their health. Unhealthy foods are typically cheaper and parents can feed their children 10 fast food hamburgers for less than 5$ today. It is not that people do not want to eat healthy, they just cannot afford it. Eating healthy does not have to be expensive as long as you do not fall for the "organic" agenda that the big corporations have taken to. People are under the impression that organic foods are the only way to be healthy, which simply is not true. Everything in the world is organic so do not be fooled by this capitalist movement. Here are some great ways to eat healthy while on a budget!
First, buy whole raw foods such as beans, rice, and grains like quinoa. Beans costs pennies and so does rice. A big bag of uncooked beans can feed a family for well over a week costing as little as 5$. The same goes for rice and whole grains.
Water is important. Many people think bottles water is healthier which simply is not true. Bottled water is not regulated like tap water is. Tap water is free and it save the environment. If drinking from the tap is a concern, then simply purchase a water filter.
Buy in bulk. There are many whole foods such as potatoes, corn, and squashes that can be purchased in large quantities that will store for months. Onions, coconuts, and carrots all store well for long periods of time and are very nutritious.
Do not purchase name brands. When buying things in the dairy department such as plain yogurt, cheeses, and butter, name brands do not have a better taste than off brands do. Name brands are nothing more than marketing schemes which costs money and that cost is then turned onto the consumer.
Protein is often expensive but it is easy to lower the intake to acceptable levels. Most people over indulge themselves with proteins which is wasteful. Eggs, liver, and canned fish are excellent sources of cheap and viable meats that will sustain a family.
Spices are extremely expensive for the quantity, but it is easy to grow them. Save the roots from ions, scallions, and garlic. Garlic and onions can be put directly into the ground, and scallions will simply grow inches every day if the roots are put into a glass of water.
